Important Information for Families!
Dear Mama and Papa Ogre,
First, we would like to thank you for your interest in auditioning for Sylvania Arts production of Shrek: The Musical. This is our 20th anniversary show, and we plan to make it our best one yet! Please note that the show is full-length production (not a junior) which means it has a 2.5 hour run time, additional musical numbers and requires a higher level of commitment than a junior show. Please ensure your child is ready to make that commitment prior to scheduling an audition!
We are still accepting children aged 8-18 for this production as many of our repeat younger cast members have shown us that they are ready for the challenge!
Shrek The Musical, while “kid friendly” does have a few more mature jokes and innuendos used within its songs, however most would go unnoticed from the untrained ear.
A couple of examples:
In the song where Shrek and Donkey sing, Shrek sings “This Ass of mine, is Asinine” which is in reference to the character being a donkey. This is a play on words from the technically correct word for a male donkey being a “Jackass”.
In the fairytale scene, there is reference to the Big bad Wolf clothing preference which alludes to the big bad wolf wearing grandma’s nightie (cross-dressing innuendo).
As a helpful guide to characterization, acting and understanding of the show, we encourage everyone to watch Shrek the Musical. You can search for it on YouTube or Vimeo. It truly is a fabulous show with an amazing storyline.
We are providing you with this information in advance to ensure that you are comfortable with your child participating in the show. It is not uncommon in musicals for play on words or simple innuendos to be used but we want all parents to be aware before signing up for an audition spot.
Please read all the information very carefully to ensure that you are fully informed!
Thanks,
The Creative Team
